Been reading an interesting book “Girl Zines” by Alison Piepmeier and it had really opened my eyes into how zines helped shape third wave feminism. Not to mention the creativity and effort involved in producing them. I then remembered that I had bought the Mellow Yellow issues from Auckland Zinefest and began to read each one from 1 – 4 in one sitting.
Note: Mellow Yellow is a kiwi zine that focuses on Asian Feminism and the like. You can check out their blog here.
I think its interesting how most of us can go through our daily lives being ignorant about our representation in society, and resort to staying quiet about the serious stuff to avoid ruining the status quo. Then you read about it and it all makes sense. Reading the articles also made me think a bit about being a kid at school and publicly rejecting things that I liked or the culture I was a part of because it wasn’t the “right” thing to like or do. I will probably go more into that another day.
Reading about zines again prompted me to go have a reading session in the library haha.
Page from a cool zine, with cute pictures. Love this aesthetic. I believe it was called “Perpetual Companion – Issue One”. These are poems written by kids. Adorable!
Another page from the same zine. Did I already say I love this aesthetic!? Cos I really do!
Doodled a little bit and it was a success! Having a full time job can make it difficult to manage other things, because I feel so tired afterwards but using this “facebook effect” methodology might just work! You know, when you plan to look at facebook for five minutes and end up scrolling for half hour? It would make sense to use that non-committed approach into doing something more productive like doodling or coding. After all, the most difficult part is making the first step.
I’m obsessed with the idea of zine making atm as you can see. Perhaps this is the beginning of something great. ＼(・ω・)/
Went out to eat Korean food. It’s our favourite! Especially with the sides, like that yummy stemmed seaweed. Mmmm. This time we had a steamboat with spicy chicken nibbles.
Bought some cute socks from Cotton On. There’s two bunny ones cos why the hell not? Plus it was 3 pairs for $10. Booyah!
This holiday has turned me back into the night owl I truly am! My hours are all reversed and everything – its terrible but oh so good at the same time. Well, I still have half a week before I go back …
Time to doze off into dreamland … goodnight!
